The Centennial Whirl – Annual Report Card – What have we done?

My Fellow Optimists,

We are now 1 year old and preparing for our Annual Membership Meeting next month (see details below).  Many of you may be wondering what all did we do in the past 12 months?  I am glad you asked.  We have been laying the foundation for the next 100 years of Optimism.  We believe that starts now by responding to a world that is waiting on us.  Therefore, we are creating a campaign to spread optimism in a very needy time and to grow by 100,000 members and volunteers within the next 12 months.  I can hear it now, has Herb been drinking?  And Yes! I have been drinking some very good optimist juice.  And I want you to drink with me, consider this:

  • The world needs us now more than ever and if we are even going to promote Optimism we have to do it now or forever hold our peace.  We can spread hope by simply offering our creed free to a starving world.
  • The board have authorized GLOBAL OPTIMIST PARTNERS, a campaign to seek volunteers around the world with the same psychographics as ours – those wanting to provide a positive vision and serve their communities.  Get ready to say hello to our new volunteers and membes.
  • We are now submitting an application to a major bank for a large grant to spread optimism in the world, build 1,000 new Optimist Clubs and do joint community projects together.

I am going to need your help, so I’m asking you to please think Optimistically – these times can be very fruitful for us, in spite of COVID-19 and the psychological impact it made in our minds.  Look at the Sunny side of things, it has been a great blessing for many of us because it has caused us to slow down and think about what really matters.  You know we only have one life to live, but it is enough if we do it right.  The good life we seek is to help others by providing optimism and hope to a fearful world.

We’ve also done some exciting things.  We have provided six scholarships for the oratorical contest for kid in Africa.  We have build a brand new optimist club called Dar Optimist (Detroit Association of Realtors), we have ordered 500 masks that say “optimists, is contagious, catch it.”  So year, we have been busy planning and moving projects along and as you know all of you have been invited to attend the board meetings the 3rd Sunday of every month from 7 – 8 pm as we discuss strategies.  So, get ready for a year of growth.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being optimistic please…stay safe and wear masks.

Let us remember our Charter Member Ted Gaffin, who passed away this month, he was a great Optimist and a great friend.

Yours truly,

President Herb

Balancing Your Books

In accounting, the term balancing your books means making up for a loss.  If an account has a deficit, when you balance the books, you have to first take all the losses, all the deficits and total them up.  Then you know how much you need to add to balance it.  When the books are balanced nobody can tell there’s ever been a loss.

In the same way, God has promised that He will balance the books of our lives.  We will go through things that put us at a deficit – a rough childhood, the loss of a loved one, something that doesn’t make sense.  If nothing changed, we would be out of balance.  Life is not always fair, but God is fair.  You may go through seasons when you’re out of balance, but God is going to settle your case.  He will add up all the losses, the disappointments and the heartaches and He will pay you back.

An Invitation to the “Good Life”, in times like these we need optimism

An Optimist is someone that believes in the future, they believe the future will be better and that ultimately all things will work for their good and for the good of mankind.

Many people find this hard to believe but this could be the greatest period in your life, depending on what you believe and accept as reality.  Remember this, for every negative event in our life a seed of equal or greater benefit is sowed.

What does that mean?  If COVID 19 forces you to stay home, you can start by thanking God because you can now re-tool yourself and bring out the best in you that you’ve been waiting to do your entire life but never had the time.  What seems to be the worst period of our life could be one of the best periods of our life, if and only if, we embrace optimism and believe in the best, rather than fear the worst.

Now, I know many of you may be thinking that’s just Herb being the great Optimist- and that is true.  I have been an Optimist (club member) for more than 40 years.  I love building optimist clubs all over the world.  I love living our Optimist Creed- my three favorite tenets are: 1) to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind; 2) To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true, and 3) to think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best!  I have become an Optimist in real life and not just a member of the Optimist Club.

I invite you to have a dose of what I am drinking today.  Consider the benefits of being an Optimist in real life – you worry less, you become healthier, you can become wealthier, and as a bonus you even love better.  So, here is an invitation to all of you my friends and your friends and their friends; become an Optimist today!  If you need a little inspiration, I invite you to check out the rest of this website and download a free Optimists Creed or better yet Join us (and go write your book, star a new social media company or go make love LOL,)

Have a wonderful day and be sure to pass this along

President Herb
